Piedmont is where Italy takes food most seriously: the white truffles of Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco from the Langhe hills, Turin’s chocolate, vermouth and agnolotti, and a UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape an hour from the city. This is our Piedmont hub. Below are the top-rated food and wine experiences in the region, then our detailed pages: Alba truffle hunting, Barolo wine tours in the Langhe and from Turin, and Turin’s food tours and cooking classes.
Top-rated food and wine experiences in Piedmont
Why Piedmont for food? Because it has the country’s most expensive ingredient, the white truffle, its most serious red wine, Barolo, and a capital that invented vermouth, gianduja and the aperitivo’s ancestor, the bicerin.
Ways in: truffle hunting in Alba with a trifulau and his dog; Barolo and Barbaresco wine tours in the Langhe; Langhe day trips from Turin with pickup; Turin food tours through Porta Palazzo and the chocolate cafés; Turin cooking classes for agnolotti and tajarin.
What to eat: tajarin with white truffle, agnolotti del plin, vitello tonnato, bagna cauda, brasato al Barolo, gianduja and a bicerin in Turin, hazelnuts from the Langhe, and Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Moscato d’Asti.
How the region works for a food trip
Turin is the base: the airport, the trains, Porta Palazzo, one of Europe’s largest open-air markets, the historic cafés where bicerin was born, and the first Eataly, opened in 2007 in an old vermouth factory. Alba, an hour and a quarter south by train, is the truffle capital and the gateway to the Langhe. The Langhe are the hills around it: Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga and Monforte for Barolo; Barbaresco and Neive to the north-east. Together with the Roero and Monferrato they were inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as a vineyard landscape, the first Italian site listed for its wine culture.
Truffles
The white truffle, Tuber magnatum, is hunted from late September to the end of January under the regional calendar, with October and November the peak, and Alba’s International White Truffle Fair runs across those weeks, in 2026 from 10 October to 6 December. Hunts with a trifulau and his dog run year round, with black truffles in summer. See Alba truffle hunting.
Wine
Barolo and Barbaresco are both 100 percent Nebbiolo; Barolo ages at least 38 months before release, Barbaresco 26, and both reward a cellar visit where the years are explained in the glass. The Langhe also make Barbera, Dolcetto, Nascetta and the sweet Moscato d’Asti. Tastings in the villages cost the price of a bottle; small-group days from Turin or Milan cost 200 to 300 dollars. See Barolo wine tours.
Turin
The city’s food is its own: agnolotti del plin, the tiny pinched ravioli; tajarin, the egg-rich thin noodles; vitello tonnato; bagna cauda, the hot anchovy and garlic dip for winter vegetables; gianduja, the hazelnut chocolate that became Nutella; vermouth, invented here in 1786. Food tours and cooking classes have their own pages: Turin food tours and Turin cooking classes.
When to come
October and November for the white truffle and the harvest, when the Langhe are at their best and busiest; book truffle hunts and hotels months ahead. May, June and September are quieter with the vineyards green. Winter is bagna cauda season and the cheapest time for Barolo tours.
Frequently asked questions
Turin or Alba as a base?
Turin for the city, the trains and the day tours with pickup; Alba for two or three nights among the vineyards with a car or a local driver.
Is Piedmont expensive?
Truffles are; the rest is fair. A truffle hunt is 80 to 140 dollars, a Barolo tasting 25 to 50, a Turin food tour 45 to 125.
How far is the Langhe from Turin?
About an hour by car to Barolo, an hour and a quarter by train to Alba. Most tours from Turin include pickup.
