Livorno is Tuscany’s cruise port, and a ship day here is a choice: Florence with a tasting, Pisa and Lucca with wine, Bolgheri’s Super Tuscans an hour down the coast, a cooking class, or Livorno’s own cacciucco and chickpea flatbread a shuttle ride from the pier. Compare the top-rated shore excursions below, then read our notes on what fits in a port call.
Shore excursions from Livorno
Wine tours and food in Livorno
The choices: Florence and Pisa with a food tasting, the most-booked day; Lucca and Pisa with a wine stop, gentler; Bolgheri or Chianti wine tours; a Tuscan cooking class near the port; Livorno’s street food tour and the Mercato delle Vettovaglie for a short day ashore.
Timing: ships are typically in port from about seven or eight in the morning to six or seven in the evening. Florence is 75 to 90 minutes each way; Pisa 30 minutes; Lucca 40; Bolgheri about an hour; Chianti 90 minutes or more, so it needs a long call.
What to eat in Livorno itself: cacciucco, the fishermen’s mixed-fish stew; torta di ceci, the chickpea flatbread, in a roll as “5 e 5”; ponce, the local rum coffee.
Florence and Pisa with a tasting
The standard shore day: a coach or minivan to Florence, 90 to 105 kilometres, with two or three hours in the city, a tasting of Tuscan food and wine or a lunch stop, and Pisa’s Leaning Tower on the way back. Tours from the port with food tastings included have the biggest review counts of any Livorno excursion and cost less than the ship’s own version. The trade-off is time on the road; expect eight hours door to door.
Lucca, Pisa and wine
A gentler day: Lucca’s walled town, about 40 minutes from the port, Pisa, and a winery stop in the hills between them with a tasting. Small-group van tours do this with a guaranteed return to the ship stated in the listing; that is the operator’s promise, not the marketplace’s, so read the cancellation and return terms.
Wine days: Bolgheri and Chianti
Bolgheri, home of Sassicaia and the Super Tuscans, is about an hour south along the coast and makes a six-hour wine day with two estates and lunch; see our Bolgheri page. Chianti is 90 minutes or more each way and only works on a long call; a half-day Chianti tour from the port exists for ships with nine hours or more. See Chianti.
Cooking classes and Livorno itself
A handful of cooking classes run near the port, including a pasta class inside the Fortezza Nuova a short walk from the shuttle stop, which fits a half day. Livorno’s own food is worth a morning: the Mercato delle Vettovaglie, an iron-and-glass market hall from 1894 with about two hundred stalls, cacciucco at a harbour trattoria, and torta di ceci from a torteria, eaten in a roll as the “5 e 5”, named for the five cents of bread and five of flatbread it once cost. A street food tour covers it in two hours.
Practical
The port shuttle runs to Piazza del Municipio in the centre; some lines charge a few euros. Livorno Centrale station is about three kilometres from the terminal; trains reach Pisa in 15 to 20 minutes and Florence in 70 to 95 minutes, which is the independent option for confident travellers. Book excursions with a stated return time at least an hour before all-aboard.
Frequently asked questions
Is Florence doable from Livorno in a port day?
Yes with a ten-hour call: about three hours in the city and three on the road. Pisa or Lucca leave more time for eating.
Can I do a wine tour from Livorno cruise port?
Bolgheri is the realistic one; Chianti only on long calls. Both are listed above.
What if the tour is late back?
Reputable operators state a guaranteed return and build in margin; choose one that does, and keep the ship’s all-aboard time, not the departure time, as your deadline.
