Umbria Wine Tours

Umbria’s wine is led by Sagrantino di Montefalco, one of Italy’s most tannic and long-lived reds, grown only on the hills around Montefalco, with the crisp Orvieto white from the tufa cliffs and the softer Montefalco Rosso and Torgiano alongside. Sagrantino and Montefalco

Umbria’s great red is Sagrantino, grown only around the hill town of Montefalco from the thick-skinned grape of the same name. It has some of the highest tannins of any Italian wine, which is why it ages for decades, and it was historically made sweet as a passito from dried grapes to serve with the Easter table. Modern dry Sagrantino is the one to taste, with the softer, everyday Montefalco Rosso (Sangiovese-based) alongside. The cellars around Montefalco are the heart of a wine day.

Orvieto and the rest

The west of the region makes the famous Orvieto white, a Grechetto and Trebbiano blend, from vines above a town riddled with tufa cellars cut into the volcanic rock – some wineries let you taste underground. Torgiano, near Perugia, gave Umbria its first great modern estate and the Rubesco red; and Grechetto is the native white worth trying everywhere.

How to visit

Tours run from Perugia, Assisi and the hill towns, half or full day with a driver so you can taste across estates. Autumn, at and after harvest, is the finest time. Pair the wine with a truffle hunt – the classic Umbrian combination – or with the olive harvest.
