Ribera del Duero is Spain’s rival to Rioja, Tempranillo grown at altitude on the high Castilian plateau, home to Vega Sicilia and Pingus, and a day among its bodegas runs from the castle of Peñafiel to the underground cellars of Aranda de Duero. The wine
Ribera del Duero runs along the Duero river on the high plateau of Castilla y León, where the vineyards sit around 800 metres and the days are hot and the nights cold, which gives the wines their depth and structure. The grape is Tempranillo, here called Tinta del País or Tinto Fino, and the wines range from fruit-driven joven to the long-aged Reserva and Gran Reserva. The region is home to Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most famous winery, and Dominio de Pingus, one of its most sought-after, alongside dozens of family bodegas.
The places
Peñafiel has a spectacular hilltop castle housing the provincial wine museum. Aranda de Duero sits over a maze of medieval underground cellars and is the home of lechazo, milk-fed lamb roasted in a wood oven, the dish the wine was made for. Valladolid, forty-five minutes from the vineyards, is the practical base; Rueda, next door, makes the crisp Verdejo whites that many tours add for contrast.
How to visit
From Madrid it is about two hours, and full-day tours with transport visit two or three bodegas with a lamb lunch; from Valladolid the wineries are on the doorstep. Harvest is October. For Spain’s other great Tempranillo region, see our Rioja wine tours.
