Costa d’Amalfi DOC
The appellation dates from 1995 and covers vineyards on terraces that were built for lemons. Three subzones matter. Furore, where the vines hang over the sea on cliffs and Marisa Cuomo’s Fiorduva put the coast on wine lists worldwide. Ravello, above Amalfi, with small estates and the town’s tasting rooms. Tramonti, inland and cooler, where family wineries such as Tenuta San Francesco farm old vines of Tintore, a red grape found almost nowhere else, alongside Falanghina, Biancolella, Piedirosso and Aglianico.
The tours
Most run from Sorrento as a day: the coast road to Positano and Amalfi with stops, then up to Tramonti for a winery visit, tasting and a long lunch of the farm’s own produce. Vineyard-only versions skip the coast drive and spend the day at one estate with a walk in the vines. Ravello tastings are the easy option for people staying there: a tasting room, five wines, a view. Furore’s cliff vineyards can be visited by appointment and some tours include Marisa Cuomo.
