At a local’s home
The Positano classic: meet the host, walk to the small market for the day’s vegetables and fish, then climb to a home kitchen and cook a three-course lunch together, eaten on the terrace. Groups are small because the kitchens are; the reviews are about the hosts by name. Three to four hours.
Rooftops and views
A few classes run on rooftop kitchens above the town with the whole bay in view, and one or two at hotels with a view of the Li Galli islands. You pay for the setting; the cooking is the same repertoire.
The farm feast
In the hills above Positano a farm restaurant runs a class-and-lunch that has become famous for its size: course after course of the farm’s own produce and wine. It is the most expensive option on the coast and it is not a cooking lesson so much as a meal with a demonstration; book it for the meal.
Practical Positano
Everything is stairs; classes tell you how many. Ferries from Sorrento and Amalfi run April to October. Book well ahead in summer; the home classes take four to eight people and fill weeks out.
