Cologne Christmas Markets: What to Eat & Drink

The short version: Cologne’s big Christmas markets open on Monday 16 November 2026, led by the Cathedral market on Roncalliplatz (to 23 December), with Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town from 23 November and the harbour market by the Chocolate Museum from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Drink Glühwein from each market’s own mug, then switch to Kölsch in a Brauhaus. Eat Reibekuchen with apple sauce, Flammlachs, Flammkuchen and Printen at the stalls, and save Himmel un Ääd and a Halve Hahn for the Brauhaus table. On a short visit, a guided market tour is the quickest way to link the markets and the beer halls in one walk.

What to drink at the Cologne Christmas markets
Glühwein is the market drink, and in Cologne each market serves it in its own mug, so many visitors drink one per market and keep the cups. Heinzels Wintermärchen has had mugs shaped like baubles. At the harbour market, the Glühwein is poured on the deck of a large wooden three-master ship moored by the stalls. At the Stadtgarten market, look for homemade Winzer-Glühwein, mulled wine from a winemaker. At Markt der Engel and Rudolfplatz, the Glühwein stands stay open an hour after the rest of the market closes.
Then there is Kölsch, the city’s own pale, top-fermented beer. Its natural home is the Brauhaus, where the waiter, called the Köbes, brings it in small glasses and is known for being quick and cheeky. Cologne’s largest Brauhaus, Früh am Dom, still taps it from wooden casks.
What to eat at the Cologne Christmas markets
| Food | What it is | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Reibekuchen (Rievkooche) | Crisp, flat potato pancakes fried to order, eaten with apple sauce; Rievkooche is the Kölsch dialect name | Heinzels Wintermärchen and Markt der Engel |
| Flammlachs | Salmon fillets fixed to boards and cooked slowly beside an open fire, served in a bread roll | Markt der Engel (the Traber stand), Heinzels Wintermärchen and the harbour market |
| Flammkuchen | Alsace-style thin flatbread with cream, onion and bacon | Markt der Engel and the Stadtgarten market |
| Grünkohl mit Pinkel | Stewed kale with Pinkel, a smoked grain sausage, the north German winter plate | Markt der Engel |
| Handbrot | A hot bread loaf baked with a filling of cheese and ham, eaten with your hands | Heinzels Wintermärchen |
| Printen | Hard, spiced honey biscuits from Aachen, west of Cologne; Aachen Printen bakers have sold them at the Cathedral market for decades | Cathedral market |
| Dom waffles | Waffles from the Cologne café Riese, sold as “original Kölner Dom-Waffeln” | Markt der Engel |
| Strudel and Apfelpfannkuchen | Freshly baked strudel and apple pancakes in the market’s sweet lane | The Naschgasse at Heinzels Wintermärchen |
| Chocolate | Liquid chocolate tasted from the fountain inside the Chocolate Museum, plus fresh cocoa creations | Schokoladenmuseum, beside the harbour market |
The one thing not to miss is a paper plate of hot Reibekuchen with apple sauce. It is the Cologne market snack, and the same dish locals eat in the Brauhäuser on weekly Reibekuchen nights.
The best Cologne Christmas markets
Cologne’s markets have different organisers and dates, but the main ones are a short walk or a few tram stops apart. Note that the Cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz markets are closed on Totensonntag, Sunday 22 November 2026.
Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom
The Cathedral market on Roncalliplatz sits at the foot of the cathedral, around a large Christmas tree and under a canopy of lights stretched across the square. It runs from 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 to 21:00, Thursday and Friday 11:00 to 22:00, and Saturday 10:00 to 22:00. The stage programme has over 100 free events. Come for the setting, a Glühwein in the cathedral mug and a bag of Printen.
Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town
The largest market fills two Old Town squares, the Alter Markt and the Heumarkt, with more than 100 stalls in themed lanes. It is named after the Heinzelmännchen, the little helpers of local legend who did the people of Cologne’s work while they slept. The Heumarkt has a 1,800 square metre ice landscape with paths and curling lanes. Food is concentrated in the Futtergasse and the Naschgasse: strudel, waffles, Apfelpfannkuchen, Handbrot, Reibekuchen and Flammlachs. The Alter Markt runs 23 November to 23 December 2026; the Heumarkt continues to 10 January 2027. Both are open daily 11:00 to 22:00 and closed on 24 and 25 December.
Markt der Engel at Neumarkt
The Markt der Engel on the Neumarkt is the angels’ market, with angel figures above the stalls. It has the strongest food line-up of the city markets: Flammlachs from the Traber stand, Reibekuchen, Spätzle, Grünkohl with Pinkel, Flammkuchen, Lángos, lobster rolls and the Dom waffles. It runs 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:00 and Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, with the Glühwein stands open an hour later.
Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz
The Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz is a Saint Nicholas village of small half-timbered houses in front of the medieval Hahnentorburg city gate. It is the family market, with free daily crafts for children in the heated Nikolaushaus. Dates are 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 21:00 and Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, with Glühwein an hour longer. Trams 1, 7, 12 and 15 stop at Rudolfplatz.
Harbour Christmas market at the Chocolate Museum
The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt on the Rhine has about 70 stalls in white pagoda tents that look like ships’ sails, a maritime theme with shanties, and a 48 metre Ferris wheel. Drink Glühwein on the three-master, eat Flammlachs by the water, and step into the Chocolate Museum for its chocolate fountain. It opens first and closes last: 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, usually 11:00 to 21:00, and to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Stadtgarten
The Stadtgarten market on Venloer Straße is the locals’ market among the trees of the Stadtgarten park, with cinnamon buns, crêpes, Flammkuchen, vegan grill food and homemade winemakers’ Glühwein. It runs 13 November to 23 December 2026, Monday to Friday 16:00 to 21:30 and weekends 12:00 to 21:30. It fills up fast in the evening, so come early.
Where to eat a proper meal near the markets
For a sit-down meal in Cologne, go to a Brauhaus. The kitchen is hearty: Sauerbraten, Himmel un Ääd (“heaven and earth”: mashed potato and apple with fried black pudding, called Flönz, and onions) and Halve Hahn, which despite the name (“half a chicken”) is a rye roll with a thick slice of aged Gouda, mustard and raw onion. Book ahead on Advent weekends.
Früh am Dom, a few steps from the Cathedral market, is Cologne’s largest Brauhaus, with room for up to 1,500 guests and Kölsch tapped from wooden casks. Come for the full Brauhaus experience.
Brauhaus Sion, between the cathedral and the Alter Markt, stands on a site where beer has been brewed since 1318 and opens daily from 12:00.
Peters Brauhaus in the Old Town is run by the family-owned Peters brewery and is known for its Himmel un Ääd. On Tuesdays from 17:00 it holds its Rievkooche-Tag, a Reibekuchen night.
Brauerei zur Malzmühle sits right on the Heumarkt, next to the ice rink. It has brewed Mühlen-Kölsch for more than 150 years; order the Rheinischer Sauerbraten with dumplings and apple compote.
Bierhaus en d’r Salzgass, in a two-storey medieval hall near the Rhine, pours Päffgen Kölsch. Order Himmel un Ääd or the pork knuckle with Päffgen beer sauce.
Em Kölsche Boor, one of Cologne’s oldest Brauhäuser, is about 15 minutes’ walk north of the cathedral. It is known for its Halve Hahn served with Cologne mustard in salt-glazed stoneware, and for Rheinischer Sauerbraten.
Café Reichard, opposite the cathedral’s main portal, has been a Cologne café since 1855 and bakes 40 to 50 kinds of cake every day.

Tips for visiting
- Go on a weekday afternoon. Weekends at the traditional markets get very crowded, and the Stadtgarten is packed by early evening.
- Plan around Totensonntag: on Sunday 22 November 2026 the Cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz markets are closed, and the Stadtgarten and harbour market only open at 18:00.
- Arrive by train: Köln Hauptbahnhof is next to the cathedral, a few minutes’ walk from Roncalliplatz and Heinzels Wintermärchen.
- Use the Christmas Market Express, a small tourist train run by Wolters Bimmelbahnen, to hop between markets.
- Collect the mugs: every market has its own Glühwein mug, so drinking one Glühwein per market is a local habit.
- If you visit after Christmas, go to the Heumarkt (to 10 January 2027) or the harbour market (to 3 January 2027); the other big markets end on 23 December.
