Ljubljana Christmas Markets: What to Eat & Drink

The short version: Ljubljana’s Christmas markets run from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, strung along the Ljubljanica river from Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge to Breg, Congress Square and Ljubljana Castle. The drink is kuhano vino, mulled wine that locals call “kuhančk”, and the foods to try are kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage), jota bean and sauerkraut stew, žganci and a slice of potica. Prices are among the lowest of the big Central European markets, and the whole fair is walkable in an evening. On a short visit, a guided market and food walk is the shortcut to the best stalls and the right gostilna for dinner.

What to drink at the Ljubljana Christmas markets

Kuhano vino, nicknamed kuhančk, is Slovenian mulled wine: red or white wine heated with cinnamon, cloves and citrus. White is as common as red here, which makes sense in a country that grows far more white wine. In December 2025 a cup cost between 2.50 and 4 euros, cheaper than in Vienna or Zagreb, and some stalls give a discount if you buy several.

The other stalls pour hot tea with a shot of local schnapps or liqueur, and in recent seasons hot gin, hot chocolate with rum and other sweeter warm cocktails at around 5 euros. Look out for medica, a sweet Slovenian honey liqueur, often sold by the shot. Slovenia is a nation of beekeepers, so honey shows up everywhere, in drinks, biscuits and gifts.

What to eat at the Ljubljana Christmas markets

Food What it is Where to find it
Kranjska klobasa Carniolan sausage of coarse pork and bacon, smoked and boiled, served with mustard, horseradish and bread Stalls along the river and at Klobasarna by Pogačar Square
Jota A thick stew of beans, sauerkraut or sour turnip, potatoes and smoked pork, served in a bowl “Spoon dish” stalls in the Old Town and at Klobasarna
Žganci Buckwheat or maize spoonbread crumbled in a pan, often topped with pork cracklings or served with sauerkraut Food stalls in the Old Town around Prešeren Square
Štruklji Rolled dumplings filled with cottage cheese, walnut or tarragon, boiled or baked Stalls by the river; sit down for them at Gostilna Sokol or Figovec
Seafood Fried squid and small fish from the Slovenian coast, a nod to Ljubljana’s Mediterranean side Food stalls in the Old Town, between Prešeren Square and Congress Square
Potica Slovenia’s festive rolled cake, a spiral of yeast dough filled with walnuts, poppy seed or tarragon Sweet and gift stalls along the river, such as Breg; by the slice at Zvezda
Prekmurska gibanica A layered cake of poppy seed, cottage cheese, walnut and apple from eastern Slovenia Gostilna Šestica and Zvezda on Congress Square
Pečeni kostanji Roasted chestnuts, sold hot in paper cones Around Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge
Medenjaki and lect hearts Honey biscuits, and red-iced honey-dough hearts (lect) made as gifts and decorations Craft and gift stalls on Breg and at Ljubljana Castle

The one thing not to miss is a kranjska klobasa with mustard and fresh horseradish, eaten standing by the river with a cup of white kuhančk. It is the city’s signature cheap meal and better value than almost anything else at the fair.

The best Ljubljana Christmas markets

Ljubljana’s Christmas fair is part of the city’s Festive December programme, run by the city and Ljubljana Tourism. Wooden huts line the river and the squares of the Old Town, entry is free, and free concerts and family events fill the nearby streets. The official 2026 dates for the markets are 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, at Breg, Cankarjevo nabrežje, Prešernov trg, Kongresni trg, Stritarjeva ulica, Pogačarjev trg and Ljubljana Castle.

Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge

Prešeren Square is the centre of the festivities and where the city’s lights are switched on, on Friday 27 November 2026 from 5pm. The huts run from the square across the Triple Bridge and up Stritarjeva street towards the Town Hall, so this is the busiest stretch for hot drinks, sausages and roasted chestnuts. It is also the heart of the free New Year’s Eve party in the city centre.

Breg

Breg, the old river port embankment on the left bank of the Ljubljanica, is the calmer, prettier stretch. The huts here lean towards gifts, crafts and Slovenian specialities such as honey, potica and lect hearts, with a few drink stalls in between. Walk it at dusk, when the lights reflect in the river.

Cankar Embankment

On the opposite bank, Cankar Embankment is lined with cafés and bars that spill onto the riverside in winter, with festive huts in front. It runs from Prešeren Square towards the Old Town and is a good place to sit with a mulled wine and watch the crowds.

Congress Square

Congress Square, the large square in front of the university, is another hub of festive huts and a little roomier than the riverside, and the famous Zvezda cake shop is on the corner if you need to warm up.

Pogačar Square

Pogačar Square, between the cathedral and Plečnik’s riverside market colonnades, has gift huts next to the central market. Pair it with a sausage at Klobasarna around the corner and, in the morning, a walk through the produce stalls of the central market.

Ljubljana Castle Festive Fair

Up on the hill, Ljubljana Castle runs its own Festive Fair from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with a life-size nativity scene open daily from 9am to 6pm (until 2 February 2027). It is smaller and quieter than the riverside fair, with views over the lit-up city. Ride the funicular up, then stay for dinner at Gostilna na Gradu in the castle courtyard.

Where to eat a proper meal near the markets

Ljubljana’s traditional inns, the gostilna, are the place for a full Slovenian winter meal. All of these are within a few minutes’ walk of the river.

  • Gostilna na Gradu, in the inner courtyard of Ljubljana Castle, serves seasonal Slovenian dishes from regional producers. Order the veal with curly kale and mushroom cream. Mid-priced (€€); book ahead in December. (Michelin listing)
  • Gostilna Sokol, in an old townhouse by the cathedral, is the classic old-town gostilna, with waiters in national costume and house-brewed beer. Order the mushroom soup in a bread bowl, kranjska klobasa or štruklji.
  • Klobasarna, a tiny counter near the central market, does one thing: kranjska klobasa in a bun with mustard and horseradish, plus bowls of jota and ričet (barley stew). Cheap and quick (€).
  • Gostilna Šestica on Slovenska cesta has been an inn since 1776, which makes it Ljubljana’s longest-running gostilna. Order a Slovenian classic and finish with prekmurska gibanica. Book ahead.
  • Figovec, a short walk west of Congress Square, is a traditional Slovenian house. Order štruklji, kranjska klobasa with sauerkraut and mustard, or bograč (a paprika stew), and Bled cream cake for dessert.
  • Druga violina on Stari trg, below the castle, serves traditional Slovenian cooking and is run as a social enterprise employing adults with intellectual disabilities. A good-value lunch in the Old Town.
  • Zvezda, the cake shop and café on Congress Square, is the place for a warm-up stop. Order the baked cheesecake (skutina pečena), the house Zvezda cake or a slice of gibanica. Prices are on the higher side.

Tips for visiting

  • Entry to the fair and the concerts is free; you pay only for food, drinks and gifts.
  • The city lights are switched on at Prešeren Square on Friday 27 November 2026 at 5pm, the busiest and most festive night to arrive.
  • Huts set their own opening hours, which vary by location, so the riverside is fullest in the late afternoon and evening.
  • The Old Town centre is car-free; walk everywhere, and take the funicular from Krekov trg up to the castle.
  • On New Year’s Eve the city throws free open-air parties on the central squares from 9pm, with fireworks over the castle at midnight.
  • Book dinner ahead in December: the traditional gostilnas near the river fill up, especially at weekends.
  • Prices are moderate (mulled wine 2.50 to 4 euros, most dishes 5 to 10 euros in 2025), so it is an easy market to graze at.

Frequently asked questions

When are the Ljubljana Christmas markets 2026?

The official dates are 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with stalls on Prešernov trg, Breg, Cankarjevo nabrežje, Kongresni trg, Stritarjeva ulica, Pogačarjev trg and at Ljubljana Castle. The Castle Festive Fair runs to 6 January 2027.

What do you eat at the Ljubljana Christmas markets?

Kranjska klobasa with mustard and horseradish, jota stew, žganci, štruklji, roasted chestnuts and sweet potica, with kuhano vino to drink. For a sit-down version, go to Gostilna Sokol or Klobasarna near the central market.

What is kuhano vino?

Kuhano vino, or kuhančk, is Slovenian mulled wine, red or white wine heated with spices and citrus. In December 2025 it cost 2.50 to 4 euros a cup in Ljubljana.

Which Ljubljana Christmas market is best?

For atmosphere, Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge. For a calmer walk and gifts, Breg. For views and a quieter fair, Ljubljana Castle, followed by dinner at Gostilna na Gradu.

Are the Ljubljana Christmas markets open on 25 and 26 December?

The fair runs straight through the holidays until 3 January 2027, but each hut sets its own hours, so expect a thinner choice on Christmas Day. 26 December is a public holiday in Slovenia, and many restaurants keep holiday hours, so book ahead.

Is a Ljubljana Christmas market tour worth it?

Yes, if you only have a day. A guide links the riverside huts with the gostilnas and shops that do kranjska klobasa, štruklji and potica best, so you taste the real thing rather than the first stall you see.
