Kraków Christmas Markets: What to Eat & Drink

The short version: the Kraków Christmas Fair on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is planned by its organiser to run from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the city still to confirm the final closing date. The drink is grzaniec galicyjski, Polish mulled wine from big oak barrels. The foods to hunt down are grilled oscypek smoked cheese with cranberry, pierogi, grilled kiełbasa and bigos, with pierniki gingerbread for afters. On a short visit, a guided food tour is the shortcut to the best stalls, a milk bar lunch and Kazimierz in one go.

What to drink at the Kraków Christmas markets
Grzaniec galicyjski (“Galician mulled wine”) is Kraków’s Christmas drink: red wine heated with cloves, cinnamon and orange, served from large oak barrels in the food section of the Main Market Square. Some stalls will add a shot of spiced vodka if you ask. One 2025 guide put a cup at around 25 złoty, so it is not cheap by Polish standards, but it is generous and very hot.
The local alternative is grzane piwo, beer heated with cloves and other spices and usually sweetened. It is an old Polish winter habit and worth one try. For something without alcohol, the chocolate stalls sell thick hot chocolate.
What to eat at the Kraków Christmas markets
| Food | What it is | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Oscypek z żurawiną | Smoked sheep’s-milk cheese from the Tatra highlands, grilled until soft and served with cranberry jam | Grill stalls on the Main Market Square |
| Pierogi | Boiled or fried dumplings; try ruskie (potato and curd cheese) or meat-filled | Hot-food stalls on the Main Market Square; a refined version at Copernicus |
| Kiełbasa z grilla | Thick Polish pork sausage grilled over the fire, served with bread and mustard | The Main Market Square; late at night from the blue van by Hala Targowa |
| Bigos | Hunter’s stew of sauerkraut and fresh cabbage slow-cooked with pork, sausage and mushrooms | The big pots on the Main Market Square |
| Żurek w chlebie | Sour rye soup with sausage and egg, served in a hollowed-out loaf | Soup stalls on the Main Market Square |
| Maczanka krakowska | Kraków’s own sandwich: slow-cooked pork in a bun soaked in the gravy | Regional food stalls on the Main Market Square |
| Placki ziemniaczane | Crisp potato pancakes, with sour cream or topped with goulash | Hot-food stalls around the fairs |
| Chleb ze smalcem | Rustic bread spread with lard and crackling, with a pickled cucumber on the side | Food stalls on the Main Market Square |
| Pierniki | Spiced honey gingerbread, often iced or chocolate-coated; Toruń is Poland’s gingerbread town | Sweet stalls at the Main Market Square and the Galician Advent Fair |
| Obwarzanek krakowski | A ring of braided dough, boiled then baked, topped with poppy seeds, sesame or salt; an EU-protected regional product | Street carts all over the Old Town, all year |
The one thing not to miss is a portion of grilled oscypek with cranberry. The smoky, salty, squeaky cheese against the sharp jam is the taste of a Polish winter. Pick a grill where the cheese is going on fresh, not one with a stack waiting.
The best Kraków Christmas markets
Kraków’s Christmas is concentrated in and around the Old Town, everything is walkable, and entry is free.
Main Market Square (Rynek Główny)
The Christmas Fair on the Main Market Square is the one to plan around: rows of wooden stalls between the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), St Mary’s Basilica and the Town Hall Tower, with a big Christmas tree, a stage for carols and brass bands, and a carved wooden nativity scene. The organiser, which runs the fair for the Kraków merchants’ guild, plans the 2026 edition from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, possibly running to 6 January, though the city had not confirmed the final date in October 2026. The 2025 fair ran from 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026 with about 105 stalls. In 2025 stalls generally opened from 10am to 8pm or 9pm, with food and drink stands serving until about 10pm.
The food area is the heart of it: grzaniec from the barrels, oscypek on the grill, bigos and żurek from huge pots, plus roasted nuts and gingerbread. On the first Thursday of December, which is 3 December 2026, local makers bring their glittering szopki (Kraków nativity scenes) to the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the square for the annual contest. The tradition has been on the UNESCO intangible heritage list since 2018, and the winning entries go on display at Krzysztofory Palace.
Mały Rynek
Just behind St Mary’s Basilica, Mały Rynek (the Small Market Square) hosts a separate Christmas fair run by IMAGO, the folk art centre. It focuses on crafts and living traditions: Kraków nativity scenes, tree decorations, lace, ceramics and handmade jewellery, with workshops alongside. In 2025 it ran from 1 December 2025 to 1 January 2026 and had its own food and drink stalls. It is calmer than the main square and good for gifts made in the region.
Galician Advent Fair by Galeria Krakowska
The Galician Advent Fair fills the square in front of the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre, next to the main railway station. In 2025 it ran from 29 November to 23 December, from 10am to 8pm, with regional crafts, mulled wine, gingerbread, cheeses, cured meats and winter snacks, plus an ice rink. It is handy if you arrive by train.
Kazimierz: Plac Nowy
Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter south of the Old Town, has no big Christmas fair, but it is where Kraków eats in the evening. In the middle of Plac Nowy stands the Okrąglak, a round former poultry slaughterhouse ringed with hatches selling zapiekanki: half a baguette baked with mushrooms and cheese, finished with ketchup and toppings. Endzior is the best-known window. In past years the city has also hosted a small Christmas fair of local makers on nearby Plac Wolnica, with mulled wine, bigos, pierogi and potato pancakes, so check whether it returns in 2026.
Where to eat a proper meal near the markets
All of these are a short walk from the Main Market Square or in Kazimierz.
- Kogel Mogel, a few steps from the square on Sienna street, gives classic Kraków and Polish dishes a light modern update. Do not leave without the hot apple pie made with Polish Szara Reneta apples. Mid-priced (€€). (Michelin listing)
- Pod Nosem, on Kanonicza street below Wawel Castle, has a medieval-style dining room and traditional cooking with careful technique. Order the homemade pasta with game sauce. Mid-priced (€€). (Michelin listing)
- Copernicus, in a former palace on the same street, is the smart choice for modern takes on Polish recipes. The pierogi filled with Polish cheese are the dish to order, and the lunch menu is good value. Upper price range (€€€). (Michelin listing)
- Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą, at Grodzka 43 on the Royal Route, is the city’s best-known surviving milk bar, a cheap self-service canteen from the communist era. Queue, pay first and order soup, a main and a glass of kompot for under 25 złoty. Bring cash.
- Endzior, one of the hatches in the Okrąglak on Plac Nowy, is the classic stop for a zapiekanka in Kazimierz and stays open late into the night.
- Kiełbaski z Niebieskiej Nyski, the blue van parked by the Hala Targowa market hall, grills sausages over wood from the evening into the small hours. Bring cash.
- Jama Michalika, at Floriańska 45 between the square and the Florian Gate, is a café founded in 1895, with an Art Nouveau interior that has barely changed. Come for coffee and cake in the afternoon; many evenings are given over to folk shows.

Tips for visiting
- Entry to every fair is free. You pay only for food, drink and gifts.
- The main fair is compact and gets very crowded on weekend evenings. Go on a weekday morning to eat in comfort, then come back at dusk for the lights.
- Cards are widely accepted at the main fair, but carry złoty in cash for small stalls, the milk bars and the sausage van.
- Hours can differ on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and after 26 December many stalls start to pack up, so the fair is fullest before Christmas.
- Be on the Main Market Square on Thursday 3 December 2026 for the szopka contest; the nativity scenes gather at the Mickiewicz monument in the morning before a procession around the square.
- The Old Town is walkable from the main station and Galeria Krakowska. Kazimierz is a 15 to 20 minute walk south past Wawel, or a short tram ride.
