Umbria Wine Tours: Montefalco Sagrantino, Orvieto & Torgiano
Umbria wine tours: Sagrantino di Montefalco, Orvieto whites in tuff caves, Torgiano, black truffles and new olive oil in autumn, and how to book.

The short version: Umbria, Tuscany’s quieter neighbour, makes one of Italy’s most powerful reds: Sagrantino di Montefalco, a dark, tannic wine from a grape grown almost only around the hill town of Montefalco. Add Orvieto’s whites aged in volcanic tuff caves and Torgiano’s wine museum, and Umbria is a perfect wine stop between Rome and Florence, especially in autumn, when black truffles and the new olive oil arrive. Here is where to go and how to book.

Sagrantino di Montefalco
Around Montefalco, the balcony of Umbria, vineyards grow Sagrantino, a grape with some of the highest tannins in the world. As a dry DOCG red it is deep, spicy and built to age; as Sagrantino Passito, made from dried grapes, it is the sweet wine monks once made for Mass. The softer Montefalco Rosso blends Sangiovese with a little Sagrantino, and the local white is Trebbiano Spoletino. Nearby Bevagna is one of the prettiest small towns in Italy.
Orvieto, Torgiano and truffles
Orvieto, on its volcanic cliff, makes a fresh white once aged in caves cut into the tuff below the town. Torgiano, near Perugia, has one of Italy’s best wine museums. In autumn, pair a tasting with a truffle hunt in Umbria; from late October the mills press the new olive oil too.
Our pick: the Montefalco: Winery and Vineyard Tour and Private Tasting (4.9 stars) pours Trebbiano Spoletino, Montefalco Rosso and Sagrantino with the estate olive oil on bruschetta.
